It’s difficult to pinpoint how to surmise Comme Des Garcons. Launching in 1973, CDG initially caught attention for it’s bold and brash rejections of what a women ought to look like, Rei’s work was characterized by draping black clothing, often harshly distressed. However, like many one-time punks, age has tempered its fury, and CDG has developed into a cultural powerhouse, with tendrils burrowed into every aspect of fashion and design. In 2017, Rei became to first living designer to receive an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.

Perhaps proof of the circular nature of trends, this 1989 bomber looks at if it could have graced the runways of France this year. It’s cut boxy and oversized, with a dropped shoulder. Classic 80s collar and chunky zipper, the velvet is thick and lush, harkening to a era before mass-production of luxury garments,
