It is difficult to distill the empire that is Comme Des Garçons into one cohesive summary. Launched in 1973, CDG initially caught attention for its brash rejections of what a women ought to look like. Rei Kawakubo’s work was characterized by drapey black clothing, often harshly distressed. However, like many one-time punks, age has tempered its fury, and CDG has developed into a cultural powerhouse, with tendrils burrowed into every aspect of fashion and design.
