Comme des Garçons Homme Plus SS2013 Studded Rider Coat

It’s difficult to distill the empire that is Comme Des Garçons into one cohesive summary. Launched in 1973, CDG initially caught attention for its brash rejections of what a women ought to look like. Rei Kawakubo’s work was characterized by formless black clothing, often harshly distressed. However, like many one-time punks, age has tempered its fury, and CDG has developed into a cultural powerhouse, with tendrils burrowed into every aspect of fashion and design. In 2017, Rei became to first living designer to receive an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.

This unique piece enmeshes a staple punk shape and metal studs with design elements reminiscent of the regal, traditional Japanese garb which Rei Kawakubo once set out to rebel against. The back of the full length coat, which sprawls out from a perfecto biker jacket, is embellished with a tapestry of abstract figures seemingly painted with ink brush strokes.
