Dior Homme AW2006 Cummerbund Denim

Dior Homme’s AW2006 was a seismic shift from the season’s which preempted it. Gone were the skinny jeans, suspenders and cropped t-shirts. In their place were sweeping Victorian coats, long, baggy suitpants and masterfully disfigured silk bow-tie shirts. The change of pace was befitting to the character it was based on, David Bowie’s “Thin White Duke”, a character Bowie described as, at different times, “a mad aristocrat”, “an amoral zombie”, and “an emotionless Aryan superman". Gone was youthful glee of “The World Was a Mess but His Hair Was Perfect” and “In The Morning”, replaced with a dour, dimly lit seriousness. The model’s gaunt appearances no longer suggested hard-partying carefree youth but rather the slow burn suicide of high society and thinly masked drug addictions, the same way the Thin White Duke curtailed the endearing and lavish self-destruction of Ziggy Stardust, replacing him with something harrowing and unnervingly mortal.

The cummerbund jeans have become the most immediately recognizable piece from the season. Featured on the runway, they feel like a wink, wink, nod, nod from Hedi Slimane that he was never going to abandon what made him so famous in the first place. A playful take on Cummerbund pants, reimagined with contracting denim. Subtly distressed, with a cut that is quintessential Dior, low-waist and drainpipe cut, intended to stack at the hem.
