Helmut Lang SS2003 Cut-Out Tank Top

Helmut Lang’s Spring/Summer 2003 collection represents a full indulgence into the abstract, a departure of familiarity. To quote Sarah Mower, “Since Lang has been in New York, his once raw, plugged-in connection to underground sources has been replaced by a quest for sophistication, expressed in abstract detailing and luxe materials. So the coats and pants got inserts or sleeves constructed of mesh, chiffon and leather. The T-shirts were often reduced to complex traceries of string. And there was cool white-beaded eveningwear, as a zippered dress or fragile jacket, intended to shine on a red carpet somewhere.”

Among best of Lang’s bondage work are the “cut-out” pieces from 2003, which use very little to suggest very much. When Lang was working at full capacity, what made his garments so alluring was not what they were, but what they implied. The subtle bondage strap inside a fine jacket, which encircled its wearer’s chest, the single strap hanging off a shirt; to the untrained eye they were not worth a second look, but to those whose gaze they were meant to catch, they were a secret handshake. Here we have a sterling example of such, this highly coveted tank is made with a light, flexible cotton indicative of the season’s themes.
