Kansai Yamamoto Embroidered Chariot Varsity Jacket

Kansai Yamamoto Embroidered Chariot Varsity Jacket

Kansai Yamamoto was the designer du jour for David Bowie throughout the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, as he conceptualized several looks quintessential to the visual lexicon of Bowie’s career, including the Ziggy Stardust tour outfits. Kansai also designed the asymmetric striped body suit which appeared on the back of the "Station to Station" cover, and rather tragically once more in Bowie’s “Lazarus” music video. Kansai’s influence has not purveyed cross-generationally like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto’s, but it can still be seen channeled in the gleeful maximalism of designers like Alessandro Michele of Gucci.

Throughout the 1980s, Kansai released a variety of oversized bomber jackets depicting elaborate hand-woven visuals, including this jacket which feature an crowned woman atop five horses. The fabric mix adds a further wrinkle with lurex threads interspersed throughout the graphic and cuffs.
