Takahiro Miyashita began his career quite young, releasing his first Number (N)ine collection at 24 years old. This has given his fans the distinct pleasure of watching him evolve and experiment as an artist. By AW07 he had reached the second stage of his tenure at Number (N)ine, the years from AW06 “Noir”, to FW09 “A Closed Feeling”.  This season was based on Johnny Cash, and borrows its name from a three CD box set Cash hand curated, where each CD pertained to one of the triplet of themes. Cash’s cover of “Personal Jesus” served as the marching track for a procession of models in black, heavily Western influenced clothing. The textures created by a mixture of fabrics was masterful, creating waves and valleys of coarse wools, soft velvets, patchwork checks, and washed out jeans.

The high-water mark of “Love. God. Murder” was the outerwear, a rakish collection of Western yoked jackets cut with military details. The velvet, shearling coat posted above stands out as one of the best. It has an heavy weight and thick shearling lining, detailed with western-style darting, and leather arrows running down the body, back, and sleeve.
