Raf Simons AW1998 Cargo Pants

Raf Simons’ Autumn/Winter 1998 collection stands out as one of, if not the strongest collection of his earlier years. The Kraftwerk-inspired season featured a heavy focus on outerwear and knitwear, as the models walked the runway wearing intricate spider web knits and long coats of black. The cuts of the coats stood out especially, with their razor sharp shoulders and form-fitting drape. The juxtaposition between the classic formal wear and the youthful, boyish cuts is one that grew to become a trademark of the Belgian designer.

A seminal piece of Raf’s early catalogue, Simons produced them in cotton, leather, and glittering iterations, and found them important enough to reissue in his RAF by Raf Simons diffusion line. This pair is an original 1998 iteration, which, despite its prominence, shows up for sale once-in-a-blue moon. These pants play to the more severe aspects of the collection, carried over from “Black Palms”. They’re built with aspects of several taboo subcultures, most notably biker and BDSM detailing, including bondage ribbing, disconnected zipper pockets, and back zips. The cut is long and slim, done with a soft cotton that sits flawlessly.
