Raf Simons AW2004 "Waves" Tee Shirt

By 2004 we were firmly in a new era of Raf’s work — the second or third, depending where one places their yardstick. He was no longer a subversive newcomer, but a pillar not unlike the giants he once sought to undermine. The season’s were emblazoned with loosely-connected names of trailblazers who defined their area of expertise, a tacit suggestion of Raf’s standing within his own domain.

This shirt features a quote from Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset, which provides perhaps the most literal extrapolation of an ideal readily apparent in Raf’s work from day one: culture as a means to survive amongst one's base state. Raf’s preoccupation with subcultures is well documented; enclaves which, at their core, are not just expressions of oneself but modes of survival. What imbues an ephemeral nature to culture, as opposed to a feeling of routine and ritual, is the immediate fight against one’s inherent and unchosen surroundings. Tagged as “limited edition,” as it was reintroduced in 2005 for an exhibition with Japanese retailer Isetan.
