Raf Simons AW1997 Darted Back Button Down Shirt

Raf Simon’s AW97 explored the ideas of youthful, upper-class subversion that he often referenced in early seasons.  Down an industrial staircase came a parade of models onto a runway so sparse it’s only decoration was a lack-of such. The procession looked as if they’d all been expelled from Exeter for drug possession, wearing sharply tailored, straight leg pants, schoolboy coats and sweatshirts made distinct by their slim shoulders and high armholes. The tailoring was immaculate yet disheveled, as if not to call attention to it’s own allure. What sparse colors he used were often crimson reds — the type old money fathers outfit their sons in.

A sterling example of the remarkable tailoring Raf produced even in his nascent state. The cut was years ahead of it’s time, tapered slim throughout the body with narrow sleeves and a fitted shoulder, the collar is bold and harkens to the new wave romanticists of the 80s. The crimson is striking, powerful yet not overstated. The most interesting detail lies on the back, for a sly reference to the upper class he adds to reverse pleats, most often found on British hunting jackets.
