Raf Simons’ Spring/Summer 2003 collection, “Consumed,” is undoubtedly one of his most provocative bodies of work. Examining consumerist culture, the Belgian designer explained what it meant to be “consumed” through the use of faux-logos and found objects. As explained by the brand itself, “Today’s living environment is about consuming as well as being consumed; some suggest this could lead to an apocalyptic end, while others, particularly younger generations, take this reality as their cue to create new, more viable and flexible personas.” The show’s atmosphere was rather sinister. The models’ outfits were primarily monochromatic, and some were accessorized with aggressive leather harnesses and bondage straps.

While the runway featured a full-on fishnet-like hoodie, this iteration presents itself in a sturdier form. It is made with a thick, fitted, cotton outer, while a fine mesh encircles the wearer’s head. When examining this choice in the context of a season critiquing consumerism, it can be interpreted as a dissolution of the personality, masking what makes one unique, and turning the wearer into a mere palate for the companies he lives by. A visual further accentuated by the models bearing faux logo tattoos across their chest.
