Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme SS2016 Sample Hand Painted Abstract Sweater

Yohji claims to not be an artist, he says fashion has never been an art, yet to deny the artistic quality of his work would be to reject what our eyes can plainly observe. Like an impressionist painter, he exhumes the depth of relatively simple subjects (dirty clothes, as the Japanese press branded his early work), in turn rendering their form secondary to the emotion he choses to evoke. Like any emotion, there’s an ephemeral sense conjured in viewing his work, and no concrete answer left in that feeling’s place. He refuses to do the work for you, where a lazy man sees a wrinkled coat, one willing to ponder the rorschach presented may conclude he is viewing anything from romanticism to suffering. This refusal to dumb down his work into easily digestible statements has rendered Yohji a favorite of artists and thinkers across the world.

The shape of this abstract sweater is quintessentially Yohji in its draped silhouette. The detailing is artisanal and experimental, with a hand painted black stripe atop a separate portion of black knit, and discolored distressing around the shoulder. It additionally features an elevated, cut-out portion near the hem.
